How Dangerous Is Iran’s Military Today? A Look at Tehran’s Remaining Combat Power
Iran’s military has been the subject of contradictory claims for decades. Iranian officials routinely describe their armed forces as capable of defeating any invader, while their opponents often dismiss them as an outdated military equipped with aging aircraft, obsolete armor, and heavily publicized weapons of questionable effectiveness.

Neither description is entirely accurate.
Iran does not possess a conventional military capable of matching the United States aircraft-for-aircraft, ship-for-ship, or tank-for-tank. Its air force is badly outdated, its navy lacks major surface combatants comparable to American destroyers, and much of its conventional ground equipment dates to the Cold War.
However, Iran has never expected to fight the United States on equal terms.
Instead, Tehran has spent decades developing a military designed to survive an initial attack, impose casualties, threaten regional bases, disrupt maritime commerce, and make any prolonged conflict extremely expensive. Its most important capabilities are not traditional fighter squadrons or armored divisions. They are ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, unmanned aircraft, naval mines, mobile coastal weapons, dispersed command structures, underground facilities, cyber capabilities, and unconventional forces.
As of July 2026, Iran’s military has suffered substantial damage from sustained American and Israeli operations. U.S. Central Command has reported repeated attacks against Iranian command centers, air-defense systems, coastal surveillance sites, missile and drone facilities, communications networks, naval assets, and military logistics infrastructure. Yet Iran continues launching missiles and drones, attacking maritime traffic, and threatening American forces and regional allies. That continued resistance demonstrates the difference between damaging Iran’s military and eliminating its ability to fight.

Two Militaries Under One Government
Iran effectively operates two parallel military establishments.
The Artesh is Iran’s conventional national military. It includes the Islamic Republic of Iran Army, Air Force, Navy, and Air Defense Force. Its primary mission is defending Iranian territory, airspace, and territorial waters.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, or IRGC, is a separate and politically powerful organization responsible for protecting the Islamic Republic and its governing system. It maintains its own ground forces, aerospace forces, naval forces, intelligence organizations, special operations units, missile forces, and foreign-operating elements.
The IRGC controls many of Iran’s most strategically important weapons, particularly ballistic missiles, attack drones, fast boats, coastal missiles, and unconventional warfare capabilities. Its Quds Force has historically managed relationships with foreign armed groups and political movements.
This divided structure creates duplication and competition, but it also gives Iran redundancy. Destroying one headquarters, communications network, or chain of command does not necessarily paralyze the entire Iranian military.
Iran’s Conventional Ground Forces
Iran maintains a large ground force, but size alone can be misleading.
Its inventory includes tanks, armored personnel carriers, artillery, rockets, helicopters, and short-range air-defense systems from a mixture of American, Soviet, Russian, Chinese, and domestically manufactured sources. Some equipment predates the 1979 Iranian Revolution, while other systems are locally produced copies, modifications, or combinations of foreign designs.
Iranian armored forces would be vulnerable in an open fight against American aircraft, precision artillery, attack helicopters, drones, and modern tanks. Iran lacks the integrated surveillance, communications, logistics, and air cover needed to conduct a large, fast-moving conventional campaign against a peer military.
That does not make its ground forces irrelevant.
Iran’s mountainous terrain, vast territory, dense cities, hardened facilities, and dispersed military infrastructure favor the defender. Iranian troops would not necessarily attempt to meet an invading force in open desert battles. They could instead use prepared defensive positions, ambushes, anti-tank missiles, drones, artillery, mines, and irregular formations.
Iran would likely struggle to stop the United States from seizing selected locations. Occupying and controlling the entire country, however, would be an entirely different undertaking.
Iran is more than twice the size of Texas and has a population exceeding 90 million. Even a technologically superior force could face enormous logistical, political, and manpower requirements during a large-scale invasion and occupation.
An Aging and Vulnerable Air Force
The Iranian Air Force is one of the clearest examples of the effects of sanctions and political isolation.
Iran still operates aircraft originally purchased under the Shah, including F-4 Phantoms, F-5s, and F-14 Tomcats. Its inventory has also included MiG-29 fighters and Su-24 strike aircraft acquired after the revolution. Iranian engineers have kept many aging aircraft operational through domestic manufacturing, cannibalization, reverse engineering, and improvised maintenance programs.
That achievement should not be dismissed. Keeping an F-14 fleet flying decades after losing access to the original American supply chain requires considerable technical skill.
Nevertheless, an aircraft that can be kept airworthy is not automatically competitive in modern air combat.
Iranian fighters face disadvantages in radar technology, electronic warfare, airborne command and control, pilot training hours, precision weapons, secure data links, and beyond-visual-range combat. Against American stealth aircraft, electronic attack platforms, modern fighters, aerial refueling, space-based surveillance, and large inventories of precision weapons, Iran would have little chance of gaining lasting air superiority.
Iran has reportedly pursued newer Russian aircraft and has worked to modernize parts of its fleet, but limited numbers of newer fighters would not erase its broader disadvantages.
The Iranian Air Force can still conduct patrols, launch limited strikes, intercept slow-moving aircraft, and complicate operations in some areas. It cannot reliably protect the entire country from a determined American air campaign.
Air Defense: Dangerous but Uneven
Iran has invested heavily in surface-to-air missiles because it understands the limitations of its fighter force.
Its air-defense network has included Russian-built S-300 systems, older Soviet designs, short- and medium-range weapons, mobile radars, anti-aircraft artillery, and domestically developed systems such as the Bavar-373. Iran has also worked to connect sensors and missile batteries into a more coordinated national network.
On paper, this creates overlapping defensive layers around Tehran, nuclear facilities, missile installations, military headquarters, ports, and other strategic locations.
In practice, air-defense effectiveness depends on much more than missile range. Radar coverage, operator training, electronic warfare resistance, communications, target identification, mobility, maintenance, and coordination all determine whether a system survives and successfully engages attacking aircraft.
Iranian air defenses have now endured repeated strikes. CENTCOM reported hitting air-defense systems, coastal radar sites, surveillance assets, and command-and-control networks throughout July 2026. These operations almost certainly created gaps, forced surviving batteries to relocate, and reduced Iran’s ability to maintain a complete picture of its airspace.
Iran’s air defenses remain capable of threatening careless or predictable operations. They may also force American aircraft to use stealth, electronic warfare, standoff weapons, decoys, and suppression missions. But the evidence indicates that Iran cannot maintain an impenetrable national air-defense shield.
Ballistic Missiles: Iran’s Most Important Weapon
Iran’s missile force remains the centerpiece of its deterrent strategy.
Over several decades, Iran developed the largest and most varied ballistic missile arsenal in the Middle East. It operates systems ranging from short-range battlefield rockets to medium-range missiles capable of reaching targets throughout the region.
Iran has increasingly emphasized solid-fueled missiles, mobile launchers, improved accuracy, maneuvering warheads, underground storage, and the ability to launch coordinated salvos. It also operates land-attack cruise missiles that can approach targets at lower altitude and from less predictable directions.
Missile accuracy is especially important. An inaccurate missile may serve as a terror weapon. A sufficiently accurate missile can threaten aircraft shelters, fuel storage areas, ports, radar installations, command centers, runways, ammunition depots, and troop concentrations.
Iran does not need every missile to penetrate American or Israeli defenses. It can launch combinations of ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and inexpensive drones in an attempt to saturate defensive systems. Every incoming weapon forces defenders to detect it, classify it, determine whether it threatens a valuable target, and potentially expend an interceptor costing far more than the attacking weapon.
Recent combat has degraded Iran’s missile infrastructure, launchers, storage locations, and command networks. However, repeated Iranian attacks during the continuing conflict show that Tehran retained operational missiles and the ability to launch them after months of strikes.
The exact size of Iran’s remaining inventory is not publicly known. Claims from every participant should be treated cautiously. What is clear is that Iran’s missile force has been damaged but not neutralized.
Drones and Affordable Combat Power
Iran recognized the military value of unmanned aircraft before many countries appreciated how dramatically drones would change modern warfare.
Iran produces reconnaissance drones, armed drones, and one-way attack aircraft. Some are relatively sophisticated, while others are intentionally simple and inexpensive. The Shahed family has become internationally recognizable because of its use by Russia in Ukraine and by Iranian-aligned forces elsewhere.
One-way attack drones give Iran several advantages. They can be launched from dispersed locations, programmed to approach from multiple directions, and used in large numbers. Their small size and low-altitude flight profiles complicate detection. Most importantly, they impose an unfavorable economic exchange on the defender.
Using an expensive surface-to-air missile against a low-cost drone may be tactically necessary but strategically inefficient. Guns and electronic warfare can provide cheaper alternatives, but no defense is perfect, especially when missiles and drones arrive simultaneously.
Iranian drones cannot replace a modern air force. They carry smaller payloads, travel relatively slowly, and are vulnerable once detected. Their value comes from numbers, persistence, range, and their ability to force an adversary to remain continuously alert.
Naval Power and the Strait of Hormuz
Iran has two naval services with different missions.
The regular Iranian Navy operates larger ships and submarines and has attempted to maintain a presence beyond the Persian Gulf. The IRGC Navy focuses primarily on asymmetric operations in the Gulf and Strait of Hormuz.
Iran cannot defeat the United States Navy in a conventional fleet engagement. Its major ships would be vulnerable to American submarines, carrier aircraft, maritime patrol aircraft, satellites, and long-range missiles.
Iran’s actual naval strategy is based on making confined waters dangerous.
Its tools include fast attack craft, anti-ship cruise missiles, coastal missile batteries, submarines, unmanned vessels, armed drones, naval mines, boarding forces, and attacks launched from shore. Large numbers of small boats can disperse among islands, ports, coves, and civilian traffic, making them more difficult to track than a traditional battle fleet.
Iran does not need to permanently close the Strait of Hormuz to cause global disruption. Temporary attacks, mining threats, damaged tankers, insurance increases, and uncertainty can sharply reduce traffic and raise energy prices.
CENTCOM reported destroying more than 60 IRGC small boats during strikes in early July and has continued targeting Iranian maritime capabilities and coastal surveillance systems. Even so, Iranian actions have continued to threaten shipping and demonstrate that geographic position remains one of Tehran’s strongest military advantages.
Iran’s Ability to Project Power
Iran’s conventional military has a limited ability to conduct large operations far beyond its borders. It lacks the heavy airlift, sealift, overseas bases, aerial refueling fleet, and logistical network needed to deploy and sustain major conventional forces at long distances.
Its regional power projection has therefore relied on other methods.
The IRGC has supplied weapons, training, money, technical assistance, and political support to aligned groups. This model allowed Iran to pressure adversaries without always exposing Iranian personnel or accepting direct responsibility for every attack.
That network has suffered serious setbacks. Several Iranian-aligned organizations have been weakened, leadership figures have been killed, supply routes have been attacked, and Tehran’s own military infrastructure has come under sustained pressure.
Iran can still project power through missiles, drones, cyber operations, clandestine action, maritime disruption, and relationships with armed groups. What it cannot do is deploy a large conventional expeditionary force comparable to that of the United States.
Overall Assessment
Iran is not a conventional peer of the United States. Its air force is outdated, its large surface ships are vulnerable, its armored forces lack modern combined-arms support, and its air-defense network has been repeatedly penetrated and degraded.
Those weaknesses are real.
It would be equally inaccurate, however, to describe Iran as militarily helpless. Iran retains the ability to launch missiles and drones, threaten regional bases, disrupt shipping, conduct cyber operations, employ mines and coastal missiles, and force an opponent to devote substantial resources to defense.
Iran’s military is strongest when it avoids fighting the kind of war the United States is best prepared to win.
It cannot reliably control the skies. It can make air operations more dangerous. It cannot defeat the U.S. Navy in open water. It can threaten ships in confined seas. It cannot occupy neighboring countries with powerful conventional armies. It can strike infrastructure, support aligned forces, and create instability across the region.
The continuing conflict has demonstrated both sides of the Iranian military. Its conventional defenses can be penetrated and systematically attacked, but its dispersed missiles, drones, naval weapons, and irregular capabilities are extremely difficult to eliminate completely.
Iran’s greatest military strength is therefore not the ability to defeat the United States in a traditional war. It is the ability to survive, retaliate, disrupt, and impose costs long after a technologically superior opponent believes the decisive phase of the conflict should be over.
